Most rape victims do not sustain great physical injury - typically, there might be some tenderness in the pelvic area and maybe the inner thighs, Wyandt-Hiebert said. Victims may not be in a position to resist if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and they may also be in shock, she said.
"The main thing to remember is that lack of gross physical injury does not mean a rape did not occur," Wyandt-Hiebert said. "The injuries are much deeper and longer lasting than any physical injury."
The UA provides some resources to rape victims. The Health Center's STAR Central office offers assistance to rape victims, and its services are confidential and free-of-charge, Wyandt-Hiebert said. STAR Central will identify services that victims need, including various counseling options like CAPS, the counselors in Residence Programs and the psychology clinic, she said.
RESPECT is a peer education group on campus that consists of students talking with students about sexual assault and how to prevent it, Wyandt-Hiebert said. Educational presentations and events are available to campus organizations throughout the year at no charge, she said.
"As bystanders, we all have the responsibility to get involved within our communities," Wyandt-Hiebert said. "It's everyone's responsibility to learn more about sexual violence and the aspects of our culture that we can change so that sexual assault is no longer the common threat that plagues one in four college women."
