"As Yogi Bear might say, I'm half scientist, half program manager and half philosopher," said Brown.
"I've been blessed with work on many different kinds of natural resources conservation projects. Back in the late 70s and early 80s, when Clinton was a very young governor, I managed energy conservation and renewable energy programs at the Arkansas Department of Energy. From there, I have taken advantage of opportunities to work on environmental remediation, environmental ethics, sustainable agriculture, forest ecology, environmental policy and biodiversity conservation projects in some of the world's most beautiful and most imperiled ecosystems."
With Brown's experience and enthusiasm, the UA had no problem hiring him to fill the new position.
Facilities went through the standard selection process of posting and interviewing for Brown's position.
"I was working as pollution prevention coordinator in the UA Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and had written what I think is a forward-thinking, aggressive approach to improving our performance in that area," Brown said.
"Also, my work history demonstrates that I've got management experience and technical competence in several fields of environmental conservation, which is an asset in a sustainability program."
"The U of A has an impressive list of projects and programs that demonstrate its commitment to environmental conservation, health and well-being, diversity and wise uses of natural resources," Brown said. "We've recently become a charter signatory to the American Colleges and Universities Presidents Climate Commitment, which commits us to broader, deeper and more comprehensive efforts to reduce our carbon footprint over the coming years. Part of my job is to coordinate development of a plan for making U of A 'climate neutral,' and to identify the most practical ways to implement the plan. I'll also try to match the resources of Facilities and academic departments, develop demonstration projects, facilitate funding for conservation and sustainable development projects, and coordinate with the city and county on projects."
