As the new year keeps moving forward, the UA campus is moving closer each day to rocking out with the Los Angeles- based rock band Foo Fighters. Vocalist/guitarist Dave Grohl and company - drummer Taylor Hawkins, bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Chris Shiflett - will perform Monday, Jan. 28, at Barnhill arena.
"The doors will open at 6 p.m., with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m.," said Scott Flannigan, the UA coordinator for communication and outreach.
The show is expected to end between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, said Jenny Butler, the student programmer for the UA Headliner Concert Committee. The time span of the concert is a result of the opening acts the Foo Fighters are bringing along on their national tour.
The opening band will be the Los Angeles indie-rock band Hello Stranger.
"[Hello Stranger] is up on iTunes right now, and they sound pretty good," Flannigan said.
"We will have two opening bands for the show. Against Me! will play second [in the lineup], before the Foo Fighters," Butler said.
Against Me! - consisting of vocalist/guitarist Tom Gabel, bassist Andrew Seward, drummer Warren Oakes and guitarist James Bowman - originated in Gainesville, Fla., with a "distinctive blend of punk, rock and even folk [music] that is impossible to label," according to the band's Web site.
Against Me! released their major label debut, New Wave, this past summer. The album "covers the topics of love, lust, war, personal integrity and substance abuse, with a unique blend of attitude," according to the Web site. New Wave was also recently name in Blender Magazine's top five albums of the year.
"Against Me! is a pretty good band. I like their acoustic stuff," said UA freshman Max Taylor.
Although Against Me! has found some success in the underground punk scene, they have not yet garnered the attention and name for themselves that the Foo Fighters have.
The Foo Fighters' most recent album, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace, received five Grammy nominations this year, including Record of the Year for their song "The Pretender," Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. In addition to their nominations at the 50th annual Grammy awards, the Foo Fighters will also perform at the event.
