"We started getting confidence once we got that two-point lead," Townes said. "We played tremendous defense from there and the crowd got us going. We just took it from there."
Townes and Ervin, who finished with a team-high 16 points, led Arkansas in scoring off the bench. The duo combined to shoot 13-of-22 from the floor.
Arkansas' bench scored 37 of the team's 62 points.
Weems suspended
Arkansas senior forward Sonny Weems was nowhere to be found in Arkansas' starting lineup or bench Saturday. It turned out the West Memphis-native was suspended prior to the game indefinitely for a violation of team rules.
"There are a few things he needs to focus on and do a little better job with," Pelphrey said.
Pelphrey wouldn't elaborate on the conditions for Weems' suspension. Weems' status for Monday's game with Missouri State depended on his attitude between Saturday and then, Pelphrey said.
"He needs to please the head coach," Pelphrey said.
Weems had started all six games this season prior to the game for the Razorbacks and entered Saturday's game as the team's third-leading scorer, averaging 10.5 points per game.
Familiar faces
Pelphrey didn't need an introduction when meeting Oral Roberts coach Scott Sutton prior to the game.
Sutton, the son of legendary coach Eddie Sutton, played for Oklahoma State when Pelphrey was an assistant coach there in the mid-1990s.
"I'm proud of Scott," Pelphrey said. "Obviously, his family is near and dear to me…He's done a great, great job at Oral Roberts."
Pelphrey, a Kentucky alumnus, was recruited by Eddie Sutton and spent his redshirt season under him. Sutton left Kentucky for Oklahoma State in 1989. Prior to Kentucky, Sutton spent 11 years as Arkansas' head coach.
It wasn't the first time Pelphrey has coached against a friend this year. In an exhibition game against Campbellsville, Pelphrey coached against high school teammate Keith Adkins, and Pelphrey coached with Virginia Commonwealth coach Anthony Grant at both Marshall and Florida. Arkansas beat VCU 70-60 in Puerto Rico two weeks ago.
