Issue date: 12/3/07 Section: Sports
Despite not scoring a point for the first seven minutes of the game, Arkansas used a second half surge to come away with a 62-51 win Saturday over Oral Roberts.

Gary Ervin led three Razorbacks in double figures with 16 points. Darian Townes scored 14 points and Patrick Beverley added 13.

Arkansas missed its first nine shots, and the Razorbacks (6-1) fell behind 10-0 before Michael Washington scored on a tip-in with 12:42 to go in the first half.

Arkansas coach John Pelphrey said ORU just came out and jumped on the Razorbacks.

"Oral Roberts played well, and you've got to give them credit where credit is due," Pelphrey said. "They're a good basketball team. They just came out and hit us first. It's not something you want to have happen, especially in your own building, but it did. I think it's just a credit to how good they are as a basketball team and what a good job [ORU coach] Scott [Sutton] has done coaching these guys and building a good program."

Even though ORU pounced on the Razorbacks at the start of the game, the play of Townes off the bench helped bring Arkansas back.

Townes scored six of Arkansas' first 10 points to keep the Hogs afloat.

"Darian Townes is a good player," Pelphrey said. "He can score that basketball. He's quick, he's athletic, he's hard to block out right now and he's getting a lot of second shot opportunities for us. Early he kind of saved us because offensively we couldn't get anything going because their defense was too good."

Arkansas managed to tie the game at 20 each, but ORU took a 29-24 lead into halftime.

The Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 10 early in the second half, but the Razorbacks responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead for the first time at the 12:50 mark in the second half.

The two teams traded baskets, and ORU even retook the lead, but Arkansas used a 12-0 run to put the Golden Eagles away.

After the game, Sutton, the son of former Arkansas coach Eddie Sutton, said the Hogs are a good team that plays with passion.
