Hogs overcome slow start to down ORU

Bart Pohlman

Issue date: 12/3/07 Section: Sports
"Well they're awfully athletic, and their best athlete didn't play today," Sutton said. "[Pelphrey] brings a great deal of passion to this program, and I saw it in those guys in the second half. I thought they really played hard with a great deal of intensity and a great deal of passion. That's the way the game should be played and that's the way [Pelphrey] coaches it. That's going to be a very good basketball team."

For Pelphrey, he said ORU plays at a different tempo than the fast-paced style of Missouri. He said the slower style of play made the Hogs make adjustments.

"I think that's just college basketball," Pelphrey said. "Obviously nobody plays like Missouri in terms of their speed and constant pressure. There's a lot of fatigue with those guys. [Sutton's] team is different. His team is not going to beat themselves. They're going to be very good on defense and not give you angles."

The game was not without some intensity.

With 1:55 remaining in the first half, Townes and ORU forward Marcus Lewis received double technical fouls for jawing back and forth.

For Lewis, that was only the beginning.

At the 4:23 mark in the second half, Lewis was called for his second technical and was automatically ejected.

In an attempt to save a ball from going out of bounds, Lewis lost control of the ball and slammed it into a press row table.

"He said he was trying to save the ball," Sutton said. "I just think it's a bad time to give a technical foul in a game like that at that point in the game."

"I think he just got a couple of cheap technicals, especially when he thinks he's saving the ball and making a hustle play and he gets a technical called on him," Sutton said.

Arkansas was without senior guard Sonny Weems against ORU because he was suspended for breaking team rules.

"Sonny is in violation of team rules, and there are a few things he needs to focus on and do a better job with," Pelphrey said.

It has yet to be determined whether Weems will play for the Razorbacks tonight against Missouri State, Pelphrey said.

"I'd rather focus on the guys who are doing the right things," Pelphrey said. "I think Arkansas deserves a disciplined basketball program."

Pelphrey said he doesn't know much about Missouri State yet, but he is familiar with its coach.

"I'm familiar with [Missouri State coach Barry] Hinson," Pelphrey said. "He was there before I was at Oklahoma State. Obviously, Scott [Sutton] worked for him at ORU. He's done very well here lately, just like everyone in the Missouri Valley Conference."

As for the game tonight, Ervin said the Razorbacks have come on out in the early minutes with more intensity.

"We've got to come out well prepared and ready," Ervin said. "We've got to take the scouting report into the game and come out fiery in the first few minutes and then try to put the team away."
