'You don't know Dick'

"Hollyweird's" own class clown, Andy Dick, reveals details of his new film, scandal-shrouded career

Issue date: 11/28/07 Section: Life & Style
"You're going to see me with my kids; I have three kids; no one knows that. You're going to see parts of me that you haven't already seen on TMZ," Dick said.

"It's funny that now [after not being allowed to work] that I'm suddenly working again and making money and doing a reality show, which is very weird for me. I've always not wanted to do one because I didn't want certain aspects of my life on TV."

Movie maker

On Nov. 6, Dick released his DVD, "Danny Roane: First Time Director," to stores. The movie, which originally aired on Comedy Central in August, is Dick's brain child.

"I wrote, directed and starred in it, but I also executive produced it, put all the money up for it and, of course, used all my friends," Dick said. "This I like doing…because I am in control. I get to do my brand of humor; I get to censor myself or not censor myself. It's all about control, and I mean a lot of control," Dick explained.

For the cast, Dick said he knew he wanted to have his friends in the film and had them in mind during the writing process; a process which Dick said took him two years to complete.

"I have A.D.D. or something. I can't even type well…I even had to dictate [the script] to someone," he confessed.

As for those famous friends whom Dick wanted to star in his movie, they include Ben Stiller ("Meet the Parents"), Jack Black ("School of Rock"), Maura Tierney ("ER" and "News Radio"), Bob Odenkirk ("The Brothers Solomon") and Kevin Farley ("Joe Dirt"). Many of these pals had previously performed with him in sitcoms, movies or other TV series. For instance: Dick, Stiller and Odenkirk worked on "The Ben Stiller Show" in the '90s.

"In the script, it says James Van Der Beek," Dick said. "He was the one guy I was surprised that he signed on. What a great actor. He really grounded the movie."

Basically, a movie-within-a-movie, "Danny Roane" is a satire about aspects of Dick's life. According to a press release from Lionsgate Entertainment, the movie is an "untamed and hilarious mockumentary about a washed-up television star trying to stage a comeback by sobering up and directing his own feature film."
