The UA Police Department is sponsoring a tug-of-war competition in cooperation with the UA health, physical education and recreation department.
All proceeds from the tug-of-war will go to the "Cops for Kids" program and to equipment and training for the UAPD health and fitness program, according to the press release. The entry fee for each tug-of-war team is $100. Trophies will be awarded to the top finishers, according to a press release.
The competition will be held Sept. 8 on the Intramural fields near Razorback Road and Mitchell. The teams must sign up by Sept. 5 to be eligible, according to the press release.
No team can have a combined weight of more than 1,500 pounds. But there is no specified limit to the number of people on a team, said Lt. Katherine Huddler of the UAPD.
"We had some new officers this year who had worked at other departments, and we were looking for a way to raise money," Huddler said. "They said their old departments tried this and it worked."
The program gives an opportunity to underprivileged kids to shop with police officers for gifts during the holiday season, according to the press release. The money will also be spent on workout equipment for the officers to maintain their fitness, Huddler said.
Any team can participate, including students, faculty, staff and organizations outside of the university, according to the press release. There will be three categories: men's, women's and co-ed.
Trophies will be awarded to the top teams, but no other prize for winning, Huddler said. Anyone who wants to sign a team up for the tug-of-war can pick up an application on campus, fill it out and mail it to her at the police department 155 South Razorback Road, Huddler said. Those who do not want to participate in the tug-of-war competition can send a donation to the same address, she said.
