Gov. Mike Beebe plans to hold a press conference on the UA campus at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the lobby of the Administration Building to discuss the recent addition to options for funding higher education in Arkansas.
Beebe announced yesterday that Arkansas high-school graduates with financial need can receive up to $1,000 per year to help pay for college under a new grant program, according to a press release from his office.
"I want to make sure that higher education is available to every willing and eligible Arkansas student," Beebe said in the press release. He said that the grant will provide financial assistance to thousands of students who otherwise might not have had the opportunity to attend college.
Only about 19 percent of Arkansans over the age of 25 have earned a bachelor's degree, according to the press release.
In the 2007 legislative session, the 86th General Assembly approved $18.4 million in funding for the scholarship grants over the next two years. The grants will be administered through the Arkansas department of education, according to the press release.
The GO! Opportunities Grant is the first state-funded college grant program in Arkansas based solely on financial needs, according to the press release.
Qualifying, full-time freshmen can receive $1,000 a year and part-time students can receive $500 a year.
Qualifications include maintaining a 2.0 grade-point average and passing drug tests, according to the press release. Additionally, the applicant must be an Arkansas resident for at least one year prior to application, graduate from an Arkansas high school (or obtained their General Education Development degree and be between 16 and 18 years old). The applicant must then enroll in an Arkansas institution of higher education within one year of high school graduation according to the press release.
