It took artist Jason Jones two weeks' time to complete his most recent mural in the UA Union.
His new mural, "The Principles," was painted outside and above the Arkansas Union exhibit room's west entrance doors. The best place to view this piece of art is from the Arkansas Union's forth-level foyer, while looking east and standing at the bottom of the stairs that descend from the Union Ball Room. Jones has painted a number of murals on campus. This mural depicts UA's five principles of campus life.
Jones painted a Razorback Hog shaped cloud galloping away from the works title, "Principles of the Univerisity of Arkanas," toward Old Main's clock tower. The principles - integrity, mutual respect, inquiry, citizenship and connection - hang level within the clouds.
Committee members from four UA departments combined their creative ideas to design the mural. Representatives from the Office of the Dean of Students, University Housing, Office of Student Mediation & Conflict Resolution, and the Office of Community Standards and Student Ethics commissioned Jones for the project.
Committee member Lynne Williams, Director of Business Services for Student Affairs, said she volunteered last year to help with the Union improvement project.
"The Union's long-range plan called for painting the murals," Williams said. "The artist we chose for the job was Jones."
"The Principles" mural is simple. It has four main elements upon its 49 feet long by 9 feet high canvas - a mostly-cloudy sky, Old Main's clock tower, autumn treetops and 11 words.
The mural's mostly-cloudy sky takes up about 60 percent of its surface, as fluffy white clouds stretch across the scene's sky-blue background. The scene depicts what one might see if he or she were to look out neighboring buildings' windows at Old Main while standing one floor above on an autumn afternoon. Four separated treetops with different colored autumn leaves rise from the mural's bottom.
