After narrowly missing an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships in March, Samuels came out with a chip on his shoulder for the outdoor season. He posted two individual NCAA regional-qualifying times and ran the last leg of the Hogs' regional qualifying 4x100-meter relay mark at the John McDonnell Invitational in mid-April.
Two second place finishes in the 100 meters and 200 meters for Samuels were nothing to be ashamed of, McDonnell said, as the winner in both races was former Razorback Wallace Spearmon, a U.S. World Championships medalist, who has been working with the Hogs for the past few weeks.
"He does anything possible to beat me," Spearmon said of Samuels.
Samuels is the first Razorback sprinter to qualify for NCAA regionals since 2005.
"[The sprinters are] really showing what they can do," said Arkansas sprints coach Kyle White.
Samuels leads the Arkansas sprints team in the Arkansas Twilight Friday in Fayetteville, in preparation for the SEC Outdoor Championships that begins May 10.
The Razorbacks are seeking their first track championship of the year, trying not to get shut out of all three track triple crown events for only the third time in the last 25 years.
