Students in smaller schools learn less, but students in larger schools learn significantly less, according to the University of Michigan Web site, www.soe.umich.edu.

When a large school is built, however, an option to create a smaller community would be School Within a School programs, according to the report.

Making a large campus seem smaller is one goal of the new school, Wilbourn said.

There are both good and bad aspects to having one school, said FHS senior Brandy Barnes. An advantage would be having many knowledgeable people, such as AP teachers, in one building, she said.

On the other hand, the school would become crowded very fast. It would be best to add on to the existing school instead of creating a new site, Barnes said.

Several other FHS students agreed that having one school is favorable. A common answer for why one campus is best is that it provides a sense of unity abetween the Ramay and Woodland junior high schools.

The public has had a mixed reaction to the decision, Heil said, though many she has spoken with want to remain on one campus.

The purpose of FHS is "to provide a high-quality education by promoting the intellectual, social and ethical development of all for the betterment of the individual, the community and the world," according to the district's Web site, www.fayar.net.

Seven goals were set up for FHS to elaborate on the main purpose. An eighth goal was added this past year.

The new goal is to "create and promote participation in a variety of activities that develop a full range of life skills," according to the Web site.

Athletics is one such activity that has added some controversy to the decision.

"Unfortunately, the main factor was keeping the school in the 7A category," said Art Hobson, UA professor emeritus of physics.

Hobson considered the decision to be "anti-intellectual" and thought that the school district is being dragged down by sports, he said.
