Razorbacks look to right ship against Georgia

The Arkansas Razorback basketball team looks to rebound from back-to-back Southeastern Conference road losses Wednesday as they return home to host the Georgia Bulldogs.

Arkansas (12-5, 1-2 SEC) has started conference play in an up-and-down fashion. The Razorbacks opened conference play at home against then-No. 8 Alabama. Arkansas scored the first 14 points and never trailed in the game as it cruised to an 88-61 victory.

Junior forward Sonny Weems, junior guard Gary Ervin and freshman guard Patrick Beverley each had 18 points to lead the Razorbacks. Ervin also tallied 11 assists to record a double-double, his first as a Razorback.

The Razorbacks carried the momentum from their conference-opening win with them to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the defending national champion Florida Gators.

Arkansas played well in a tough and loud environment, but came up just short in the end, falling to the Gators by a score of 79-72. Darian Townes led the Hogs with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Hogs followed the loss at Florida with another road defeat, this one at the hands of Ole Miss. Arkansas rallied from a 14-point deficit with eight minutes remaining to take a one-point lead, but could not hang on for the victory, falling 74-72.

Junior forward Charles Thomas paced the Razorbacks with 23 points, including a 3-pointer in the final minute that gave the Hogs a one-point lead.

Arkansas head coach Stan Heath said things did not go as planned in the waning moments of the Ole Miss game.

"Gary [Ervin] driving was an option, not the primary option, but we were not in the right area of the court we should have been," Heath said. "It did not get executed the way we work on it every day in practice."

Ervin drove the lane in the final seconds against the Rebels, but got too far underneath the basket. His pass was then knocked out-of-bounds.

Heath said he thinks the team will get better and learn from the experience.
