Owing to the locality of RZ's Coffee house, the university decided to implement a new coffee house on the other side of campus.
Peabody Perks, located in Peabody hall in front of the old main lawn, serves the same purpose as RZ's, but it "takes the weight off of RZ's a little bit," Carolyn Core said. "[It] gives people on the other side of campus something a little bit closer."
Core is the Satellite Operator Assistant Manager for Chartwells; the company is in charge of all food services on campus. Core said Peabody offers everything RZ's has except for the frozen drinks.
"We're a smaller more intimate coffee house than RZ's, a scaled down version," said Heath Stephens, the supervisor for Perks. Stephens had been working at RZ's for a year and a half before Perks opened. The idea was originally brought to Chartwells by Dr. John Murry, Associate Dean for Administration and Associate Professor for Higher Education.
Lynne Williams, Dining Contract Administrator said Chartwells had wanted to put something on that side of campus and Dr. Murry brought the idea of putting a coffee house there. Williams said Perks is an effort from a three-way partnership between Student Affairs, Higher education, and Chartwells.
Core said that Chartwells only took care of bringing things in, like the cappuccino machine.
"We really came in with the tail end of things," Core said. "All the hard stuff was done by the university." The university and Murry were in charge of hiring the architects, designing the layout, picking the furniture, and design.
A former university student was responsible for the wall to wall painting of Old Main. The coffee house overlooks the Old Main lawn.
Williams said she likes the fact they kept the chalkboards from the old classroom. "[They're] trying to hold on to the old historic classroom but at the same time bringing in the modern technology, like the big screen TV and that sort of thing," Williams said. She said she likes the physical space it brings to the university community.
