Filmmaker discusses independent films, fame, his new book

Eryn Rubey, Staff Writer

Issue date: 10/19/05 Section: Lifestyles
Success is never immediate in the movie business, but this is specifically true on the independent film level. Some directors complete over 70 films before receiving any accolades or recognition, he said.

"A good independent film will cost much more than the profits in the beginning, but you make back the money eventually depending on the credibility of the movie and how you market it," Baker said.

To make money to finance his independent films, Baker directs commercials and corporate and educational videos. His biggest name client is Nike, for whom Baker has directed over 15 commercials.

"The whole thing was nothing short of amazing. I couldn't believe how easy it would be for me to make a movie. I mean there is a lot involved in the process, but he really made me feel like I could do it too," UA student Casey Ainley said.

Baker is happy that people feel good about filmmaking because of him.

"Bringing my love to others is the most fulfilling feeling of all," Baker explained after the workshop. "If one person from each of my workshops leaves feeling 'touched' by my lesson, then I have succeeded."

Currently Baker is continuing his "Angry Filmmakers IRS Tour" and working on his book, which is tentatively titled "The Angry Filmmaker's Guide to Independent Filmmaking".

Baker encourages those who missed the workshop to visit his website www.angry filmmaker.com.
