A family affair

Father and daughter team Miller and Lucinda Williams will perform tonight at the Walton Arts Center

Her musical career began when she left the UA, where she was studying cultural anthropology, to perform. She grew up around poets and poetry through her father, whose writing counsel she still seeks. She absorbed growing up in the South and uses country, blues and rock influences in her songs.

"[She has] a voice in language among the few you can believe in modern music and literature," friend Matthew Ryan said.

In 2003, Time magazine dubbed her "America's best songwriter."

She has released the award-winning albums Essence, Sweet Old World, and World Without Tears. Her singing and songwriting style has caused what the Los Angeles Times calls the "Lucinda Effect," a proliferation of female singer-songwriters in their 20s and 30s whose music has a sound similar to Lucinda Williams.

"Lucinda and Miller are both poets," Thomas said, "but she's a poet of song and he's a poet of work."

The upcoming concert will be their eighth performance together and they show no signs of stopping anytime soon.

With lives as busy as theirs, it is not easy for them to spend time together, they said, so "Poetry Sung...Poetry Said" is the perfect opportunity for them to strengthen the father-daughter bond.
