As spring break nears, students are finalizing their itineraries for a trip they hope will make a difference. Alternative Spring Break is a community service program funded and sponsored by University Housing. ASB offers students an opportunity to visit different cities working with agencies, and giving back to the community, said Becky Howard, assistant director for residential education.

"University Housing has been sending students on ASB trips for the past eight years," Howard said.

Past locations include New Orleans, Dallas, New Jersey, San Antonio and other cities in the United States.

At the beginning of last semester, students who signed up for ASB were assigned to different committees: transportation, worksites, housing, entertainment and fundraising. This spring break, the students will travel to Boston. Students who were involved in ASB last year chose this location, Howard said. The students will be doing a variety of work, including working at soup kitchens, local shelters, Girls and Boys Clubs and cleaning up trash.

The idea of doing several different community service projects is what appealed to sophomore Lance Sharp when signing up for ASB, "because I am wanting to go into a career where I will help people everyday," he said.

Students are required to pay a $25 deposit, and the rest of the money has to be earned by the students participating in ASB through different fundraisers. Some of the jobs included working concessions for Chartwells campus dining at football and basketball games, selling Krispy Kreme donuts and participating in a miss-a-meal program with Chartwells. Students were also able to ask individual residence hall senates to contribute money.

Sharp signed up with ASB for the experience and the opportunity to meet new people, he said.

"I originally signed up with ASB for the experience of traveling to a large city and meeting the people that I would not usually meet if I was to go as a tourist," he said. "I hope to gain experience in dealing with different types of people and their habits in larger cities. I also hope to have several experiences in feeling satisfaction after having done work that could make someone's life more meaningful and happy."
