Finally, then, we get to the most interesting choice for residents of Arkansas. Asa Hutchinson, best remembered for presiding over impreachment hearings for then-president and fellow Arkansan Bill Clinton. However, since his days in the House of Representatives, Hutchinson has steadily risen through the ranks of the bureaucracy from being the top dog in the Drug Enforcement Agency to his current position as Undersecretary of Homeland Defense.
Hutchinson has been working in the department and it seems likely that the president, who created the department, will want to keep the leadership structure similar to the way it was under Tom Ridge, who until this point has been the only Secretary of Homeland Security. Hutchinson is certainly qualified and would almost certainly enjoy a step up to a cabinet-level position in the administration.
It would certainly be nice for the state if an Arkansas politician could reach back into the highest levels of government. Since President Clinton finished his second term, the state has been largely placed on the back-burner, and while the Secretary of Homeland Security isn't an extremely visible position within the cabinet, it is certainly one that Hutchinson can succeed in and thus reflect favorably upon our great state.
This Week's GOOD CALL: The poetry of Brian Francisco was recently released by the Ozark Review. Francisco, a student at the UA, has produced some fine verse and the entire UA community should take note of his emergence. Any time one member of our community begins to succeed we are all benefited from their success.
This Week's BAD CALL: A British software company released a computer game that allows the user to be the lone assassin in the book depository in Dallas. Yes, in a truly disgusting and distasteful display, the developers have taken one of the single most traumatic events in this nation's history and turned it into a cheap, grotesque form of entertainment. I sincerely hope that no American will purchase this disgraceful product.
