Many of the non-traditional students at UA lead very different lives than traditional students. Most have families. And many have full-time jobs or own their own businesses.

The definition of non-traditional students is someone who is either older than the average college student or raising a family.

Linda Schneider is a law student with two children and a husband, who practices dentistry in West Fork. Schneider grew up in Jonesboro, where she later attended school.

Schneider earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro in 1994. Schneider will earn her juris doctorate from UA School of Law in May 2005.

Schneider has wanted to attend law school since she was in the third grade. Now she is pursuing her dream. She hopes to practice law in Northwest Arkansas, close to her home.

Aside from her school responsibilities, Schneider has many duties to her family and home life, she said. She has two sons, ages 3 and 13.

Schneider married her husband fresh out of college. She met her husband through a mutual friend at Arkansas State University. Her husband graduated the University of Tennessee Dental School in 1999, Schneider said.

Schneider decided after her husband graduated to return to Arkansas after living in Memphis. They also needed to move to an area that had a law school, so Schneider could reach her dream she has had since the she was a child.

"My husband and I moved to this area because it is a great place to raise a family, the economy is good, and my husband was given the unique opportunity to purchase a dental practice in West Fork," Schneider said.

The Schneiders have to coordinate to each arrive at their respective destination for work and school along with getting their two children to school. Planning for mornings can sometimes be the most difficult part of the day to coordinate, Schneider said.

Schneider was excited about returning to school to earn her law degree.

"I have always wanted to attend law school," Schneider said. "I believe education gives one more opportunities and choices in life."

Schneider is hoping to find those opportunities after she graduates and begin the career she hoped for.
