Businessmen donate to fund ethics research

Three Arkansans have helped create a new position for an accounting professor in the Sam M. Walton College of Business to focus on corporate governance and behavioral accounting.

Larry Wilson and Natalie and Tom Garrison have donated a total of $750,000 to fund the Garrison Wilson Chair in Accounting in the business college.

"Tom and Larry have been long-time supporters of the college through their work on the Dean's Executive Advisory Board," said Doyle Williams, dean of the Walton College. "They have guided the direction of the college."

Their gift will by matched by $750,000 from funds available through the Walton Family Matching Gift Program to create a $1.5 million endowment for a chair.

Larry Wilson donated $375,000, and Natalie and Tom Garrison donated $375,000.

"We are indebted to Larry Wilson and Tom and Natalie Garrison for their support of University of Arkansas faculty," Chancellor John A. White said.

Accounting professor Don Finn will be the first faculty member to have the Garrison Wilson Chair position.

Finn is a UA graduate and returned to teach at his alma mater from Louisiana State University in 2003. At LSU, Finn was the accounting department chairman. He has also taught at Texas Tech University.

His teaching interests include managerial and cost accounting.

His research interests focus on behavioral issues in accounting, most recently emphasizing corporate governance and ethics.

Finn earned his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech, a masters' degree from Arkansas State University in accounting and finance and a doctorate from the UA in accounting.

Wilson, who earned his bachelor's degree in industrial management in 1970 and a master's degree from the Walton College in 1971, is president of First Arkansas Bank & Trust in Jacksonville.

In 2003, the Walton College awarded Wilson the Alumni Outstanding Service Award.

He has led the Walton College's Campaign for the 21st Century committee since it was launched in 2001. He is in the Arkansas Alumni House Hall of Honor and the Razorback Foundation Top 200.

Tom Garrison, a 1982 graduate of the Walton College in accounting, is founder of Garrison Management Corp. in Harrison and Fayetteville. Natalie Garrison attended the UA as well as North Arkansas College.

Tom Garrison is a former president and chief executive officer of FedEx Freight East.

The Walton College accounting department recognized him in 2001 with an outstanding alumni award. Natalie and Tom Garrison operate a financial management and a real estate development/management company and will be opening an accounting services business in Fayetteville.
