Job market improves

Carrie Coppernoll

Professional or executive occupations and service occupations represent the fastest growing markets. These industries are also expected to add the most jobs, accounting for more than half of the total job growth over the 2002-2012 decade.

The positions projected to add the largest number of jobs include registered nurses, postsecondary teachers and retail salespersons. Gary Steinberg, the agency's assistant press director, said, "There are jobs available for everyone, regardless of educational obtainment."

Jim Case, director for Cal State-Fullerton's Career and Placement Center, said while it is important to research the market when looking for a job, the market as a whole can sometimes be irrelevant to the individual jobseeker.

"There are some constraints and parameters in the market, but overall, the traditional rules and tools for looking for a job still applies," he said.

The most important skill an individual should exemplify is the ability to understand and articulate their capabilities well, Case said.

"The success of an entry-level graduate depends on their ability to differentiate themselves from the competition," he said. "That means that those who are best prepared will most likely be successful." The competition remains, but opportunities for individuals look promising, he said.

"Don't artificially limit yourself by geography," Case advised. "You may pass up good opportunities all because the commute was not attractive."
